Camp Coconut - a safe, fun environment for children affected by the Tsunami

Camp Coconut is a Project to help Sri Lankan children overcome the trauma they have suffered as a result of the Tsunami disaster. It will encompass an outdoor activity centre with tree houses, rope walks, bike trails and all manner of 'outward-bound' facilities, together with a community centre and staff accomodation. The purpose is for these children to have a permanent and local base where they can feel safe, secure and have lots of fun!

Welcome to Camp Coconut

Camp Coconut is a children's activity day centre which is planned to be located 2-3 kms inland from the devastated coastal strip of southern Sri Lanka.

It is a humanitarian response to the devastation that has affected large tracts of coastal area in the District of Galle, Sri Lanka, following in the wake of the Tsunami that hit this beautiful island at c. 9.00am on Sunday, 26th December, 2004.

It is a project that aims to help the regeneration and 'normalisation' process that , over the next few months and years, will be vital to the re-establishment of the fishing communities in this part of the island.

It will centre upon providing a safe haven where children and their families can come and have fun, learn new skills and receive the appropriate counselling to overcome their trauma, deep-rooted fears and anxieties. It will also focus on supporting minority groups such as pregnant mothers, orphans and one-parent children (most notably, those who have lost their mothers) who, since the Tsunami, have been without the normal community support infrastructure.

About Me

Name: Nick & Anne Wynne-Morgan

We arrived in Sri Lanka in November 2004 with a view to starting a tourism-related business and through that, to fund the establishment of a children's home. We have seven children, four of whom are with us in Sri Lanka. On the morning of Sunday, 26th December 2004, we were having coffee on the beach with six of our children and six other close relatives, enjoying a Xmas break at Club Lanka, Ahangama - away from the noise and pollution of Colombo, where we live. The Tsunami hit the hotel and many of us were washed away in the water, other family members watching the horror from a first floor balcony. We were extremely lucky to survive and feel we now have a purpose to help those who weren't so lucky that morning. Since 26/12, we have been involved in a umber of relief projects, working in the displaced persons camps, repairing schools, supporting orphan children and helping to finance the building of temporary houses before the monsoon comes. Camp Coconut is now our priority - to create a long term facility that local affected children and families can use for fun, learning and community support.
